Career Day
Schoolwide career day today. Counselors put it together and our students got to meet all kinds of professionals.
My class met an engineer who designed toys for McDonald's, a financial planner who worked at Home Depot headquarters and a cake decorator from the local grocery store.
The first two were pretty fascinating, especially the engineer - I need a plastic toy from a Happy Meal because he says the screwheads need a triangular screwdriver he invented - but if you are a cake decorator and you are going to be talking about your job, it is my opinion that you need a visual, especially with 5th graders (and their teachers).
BrownBear met a lawyer who knows her dad. That was pretty cool for her. We had some soldiers and a midwife; firemen and policemen. The Dairy Queen Dad. A college librarian.
Next year, I want to go on the firetruck and eat a peanut buster parfait.

What?? No free cake?? Poor you.
I tagged you for some silly meme! Come see.
Our career day was last week. We had three fantastic visitors and then we got to venture to the parking lot to visit a few exhibits. Our visitors were an archeologist, someone in nuclear medicine, and a grocery store manager (Publix). I warned the kids the day before about behavior, etc. and told them who would be speaking to them. They made fun of the grocery store manager thinking he'd be really lame. Did you know they make 80 to 100 thousand a year? At the end of the day the kids decided the store manager was much more interesting.....even more than the cool archeologist with the cool Indiana Jones hat and long pony tail.
